Has your ancestor broken the law? Or has your ancestor been pulled into the judicial system as a victim, witness or juror?
This course on British and Irish crime and criminality doesn't only explore the "what" questions: the judicial and penal systems and their associated record-keeping. It also explores the "why" questions: the historical attitudes to crime and to the "individual" in general, and how these attitudes influenced the criminal justice system.
Thus, this course is helpful for anyone with criminal ancestry, whatever their country of origin.
While this course is not yet available, one lesson discussing British crime and punishment has already been given at conferences and webinars. It has been recorded for the syllabus and is available for Annual Members in the A Helpful Miscellany series.
This lesson will be expanded upon in this Rogues and Rapscallions course.
This seminar begins by discussing the big picture question of the British criminal justice system, including the contemporary attitudes to criminals and the policy of transporting them abroad. It then covers the types of records that deal with the crimes and punishments of British criminals.
This lesson can only be accessed by Annual Members through the A Helpful Miscellany series (click here for the lesson list).
